Duane  > Other > US Surfski Champs 2012, San Francisco
The US Surfski Champs was absolutely amazing. A big thank you to everyone behind the race for making dreams come true. Just under a year ago I was inspired by a video of last year’s race and bought a surfski with the goal of surviving the long course well this year. San Francisco never disappoints as a paddling destination. I got all the challenge I wanted and even survived the long course better than I expected. I’m looking forward to another year of hard training and racing there again next year.

I drove up to San Francisco three days before the race.
Scouting part of the race course from Fort Baker.
I saved some money by camping in Petaluma, but next year I think I'll spring for the official race hotel.
I checked out the Bay Model two days before the race.
The Bay Model.
The Bay Model has the water level go up and down just like the tides so you can see the currents.
Kim fighting the flood tide and headwind to make it out the Golden Gate two days before the race.
Two days before the race Kim and I paddled out of Fort Baker, under the Golden Gate, to Point Diablo and back to check out part of the race course and get used to the water.
Cooking out of the back of my truck at the campsite.
